Subject: Cost of extra nights at Pelican for Owners
Date sent: Fri, 20 Jun 2008
From: Paul da Silva
I read the comments of others and I too agree with them. Not only are
the rates set for non-owners but they also double on Fridays and triple
on Saturdays. Those who deposit their weeks into the rental pool are
killing the goose that lays the golden eggs and I predict will receive
even less of a return from the pool. I like others found significantly
better rates at nearby facilities. When all else fails the MAHO is
less than $100/night plus taxes per hotel room.
After 21 years at the Pelican this is the first time I've had
something to complain about. Paul da Silva - Miami Fl.

Hi Judy,
I am curious about the procedures for determining rates and
availability of extra nights accomodations at the Pelican. I am
reading about the difficulties some people have had when they have
called ahead to arrange a room and weren't able to get something, or
else they are being charged prices that they consider high. This
seems in contrast to what I witnessed this past April while waiting in
line to check-in. My wife and I saw someone ask if they had an extra
night available because something had changed with their travel plans.
The resort said they had a special going on to try to fill the space
in the new buildings and they gave him a night for $50 in the new
building. I almost asked for another night just to get that cheap
rate in the new building :) Thought you might be interested in this
option. Thanks, Brian

Subject: II unit availability

Judy,
I read with interest Mary Damm's letter of 11 June 08 regarding exchange.
We were unable to use our 2 weeks this year and I banked them thinking that
we would use one week in November and 1 week next year. But NOOOOO, the
soonest availability in St Maarten for the times we wanted to travel was 2010.
I too got hit with the exchange fee and I opted for the guarantee of $64+ so
the entire exchange was over $200. Never again! I will list on your site
and in Jeff Berger's as I received calls from ads on both those sites for
my April weeks, unfortunately AFTER I banked the weeks.I needed a little
more patience. Lesson learned! Another friend who owns the same weeks,
put his units on your site and rented both. So for Mary and others
interested in getting their weeks to other owners - use Judy's site
and Jeff's - they work! Thanks Ann Elliott

Dear Judy,
It is surprising to read about some disappointments at Los Gauchos.
My husband and I eat there at least twice every year. We have had
terrific meals and have found Liesa and the staff to be friendly,
attentive and very caring of their guests.

Hi Judy,
Thank you for the newsletter. I am impressed that despite your PC problems
you continue to get it out.
On the topic of exchanging and. or renting units. There are so many was to
rent and or exchange a timeshare unit today. This is both good and bad news.
For an owner looking to rent, exchange or sell it is good to have many options
to choose from. For some one who is trying to exchange or rent it means there
are many places that you need to look at. So to use ISCO alone limits ones
options. I use RCI, II and or Dial an exchange for full service exchange
companies, there are other also. On the web there is your site, TUG and
Redweek all of which have worked for me in the past, there are many others
I am sure. The fees for using the web sites are usually much less that
those of ISCO and the full service exchange companies.
My experience of Los Gauchos was not good. We did not eat there but
the service at the owners breakfast was not friendly. We had a
takeout meal one evening that did not have the bead as advertized
(they had run out) and the chicken was too dry to eat. When we
returned it, it was replaced and we were told that it was "yesterdays".
Also not caring customer service. The quality of the rest of the food we
had was good. Yours, Roy

I am so happy to see that the White Elephant sales people are coming to
grips with fact that the building is nothing special. Two years ago,
there was a Bimbo that was in charge of sales for the project. I told
her then that her lies would only carry her so far. I had asked her
( I cant remember her name, but I'm sure you would know her) Since
you built this monstrosity on OUR PROPERTY the original Pelican owners
should get first dibs at purchasing units at a discount or 1 week at
a time. I was told that the sales force is targeting, get this " Jet
Setters", not common people. Needless to say I had her in tears before
I left. I explained to her that A Jet Setter wouldn't be caught dead
not only in a Timeshare but especially one that doesn't have a beach.
My suggestion is this; from what I was told by the sales staff, the
interior of the rooms cost about 40,000.00 a unit, complete with granite
and bathrooms furnishings etc.. Why don't we really consider the real
Pelican owners that have gone through bankruptcies, hurricanes,
miss-management and the same old dingy rooms for the past 25 years.
Lets do a one time assessment for $1000.00 a week and bring the whole
property up to snuff with 2008 amenities. By doing this everything
would be new, therefore the maintenance for the next 5 years would
be nill. I know your sitting there laughing thinking about the owners
and the past assessments that were needed due to miss-management
issues and renting the bars to the wrong people. Those were costs
that we could not appreciate because, the money wasn't used to
beautify the rooms. I don't want you to get the wrong impression.
because we do love the Pelican, especially the location and the
prople , but were tired of telling people and making excuses like
for instance (come to St Marten, you'll have a great time, the
rooms are pretty well dated and beat up, but how much time do you
spend in the room? don't worry you'll have a blast) I'm sure anyone
reading this letter has said this one time or another.
