Subject: Pelican Resort Week 20 Vacation
Judy:
I just returned from my yearly vacation to the Pelican and I
want to give you an update. I have been a Pelican owner
since 1991. I used the pre registration available on the
Pelican web site and I am happy to report that it worked
perfectly. There was a long line at check in but I was
identified as someone who used the pre registration and was
moved immediately to a separate check in line which took about
ten minutes after which I had everything I needed to proceed to
my unit. The front desk staff seemed well trained and professional.
The resort looks terrific! Each year I always leave feeling
some sense of improvement, but this year I think the improvements
were more profound. The resort has a well manicured and well
maintained look wherever I looked on my own yearly foot tour.
I took a tour of the Marina Residences and used the pool facilities.
This is quite an impressive new addition. If my unit would now
have a blocked view I would be upset also, but I think you have
to look at the big picture as to what this project means to the
total Pelican Resort community. If this project provides the
needed cash flow stream to give the resort the funds needed to
make all the improvements to bring the resort back to the way
everyone wants it, then all Pelican owners are winners. I want
to thank you and everyone involved in making the tough decisions
to keep the Pelican moving forward in a positive direction. You
have a thankless job.
Some restaurant comments from my vacation:
Los Gauchos I had a great steak dinner ( fantastic taste!) and
my party of five all thought the food was great. The service was
also very good. The restaurant was crowded for off season.
I met Liesa the owner who was at the door upon exiting the
restaurant to thank everyone for their patronage. I shall
return. What a change from the Rich's! French Bakery At Pelican
This is a nice addition at the resort. The pastry is very good
and I also had a sandwich at lunch on their own French baguette
which I believe is superior to the Peli Deli but the Peli Deli
puts more meat within their sandwiches. La Gondola Italian
restaurant located over at Cupecoy. The food here is always
great as well as the service. The restaurant is elegant inside
and was packed with customers for off season. Always a return
visit each year. Pineapple Pete's Located on the way to Cole
Bay always very crowded with good music, drinks, and food especially
grilled fish and lobster. Marc's Place On the way to Phillipsburg
located in the parking lot at the Grand Marche. Good food with a
local flare, all you can eat ribs, etc.that is relatively inexpensive.
Lee's Roadside Probably the best dollar value in my opinion in St.
Maarten when considering the quantity and quality of food you get.
If you like grilled fish, lobster, chicken, and ribs this is the place
plus you could walk to it. Greenhouse at Bobby's Marina I like to eat
lunch here when going to Phillipsburg on my shopping day of the trip.
A touch of both American and island food. Grand Case Beach Club
Located on the French side beyond Marigot. This is a great place to
have breakfast with a breathtaking view of the water and Creole Rock.
Beach Bar At the Pelican I like the additional deck which was added
to the Marina side of the beach bar. They have an expanded menu now
with tables to sit at. A new chef now I believe from the Flamingo who
is putting out some good looking food. You could stay in your beach
attire and end the day eating at the beach bar. I believe they also
have some great ideas going forward with a new kitchen, etc. Malti
from the marina pool is the bar tender here and is doing a great
job serving a lot more people than I am used to seeing at the beach
bar. Boat Trip The boat trip offered on a Sunday and Monday evening
for $10/pp at the Pelican which goes up the west side of the island is
probably the best $10 I've ever spent for anything. What a way to start
your vacation.
Judy I wanted to point out an error I see in your web site. In the photos
section you have links for the marina pool, and then a link for food at
the marina pool which shows a picture of the marina pool with the caption
"Staff from the Red Piano Bar are now serving drinks and food at the marina
pool." The only operation the Red Piano Bar is operating at the Pelican is
the Red Piano Bar only.
Judy's Response: As you are all aware I have computer problems
and will be a few weeks without mine. The hard drive has to be
replaced. According to Google apparently 20% of all computer
hard drives fail. I have to compete with Dave for computer time.
I will make al postings and changes when I have my computer
back and up and running.

Hi Judy,
We have a Sat-Sat and a Sun-to Sun. in July. We have always
rented a room from ISCO so that we don't have to break up our
stay, and it is very convenient for us to not leave the Pelican
for one day. Sometimes we also rent a room on Friday if we
arrive early (Fridays) so that we can save some $ on airfare
(especially now with the oil Prices being outrageously high!).
Mike (my husband) called ISCO over a month ago
and where we usually rent for under $100 a night the ratesare
now INSANE! The person he spoke with was supposed to get back to
us in a day or two, well we are 'still waiting'.
That really is not how they should be treating their owners!
Judy, do you know why the rates have more than doubled? I think
that they wanted $250 for one night! So much for saving $ coming
in on a Friday! We haven't rented anything yet, and going off
the grounds on July 11th and the 19th would be extremely inconvenient!
We are not wealthy people (I am an Inner City Special Education
teacher and my husband is a nurse) and if it is going to cost us
an extra $250-$500 to come down, plus the high maintenance costs...
we may not be able to afford to come down anymore!
I love the Pelican and all the wonderful people there, but with
the rising oil prices (for airfare and car rental/gas prices),
higher Pelican room rental costs, and the maintenance fees...
normal people like us won't be able to afford to go anymore!

Subject: Thanks...
We stayed at the Pelican with our friends during the week of
May 3rd through the 10th (our third time.) We tried something
different this time dining at the Pelican facilities, although
we typically go out of the facilities to eat. I have to tell you,
the food outside the facilities has lost it's zest-appeal, and
none offered anything to take home to share with others-
except Los Gauchos.
my wife & I enjoyed the dining atmosphere that was both romantic
and quite (in fact, they turned the lights down a bit to make it
even more romantic!) The service was friendly and nothing other
than the best that could be offered by any thoughtful employee.
The food was a "slice of heaven", and I was taken back at the
portions and quality offered by your establishment which were
those that "fit my type of person {6'3"} and appetite!
Although Banana's use to be the place to go for "three-finger-thick
steaks", we found it was no longer that way, and were disappointed
at the quality and quantity offered. The ribs at two places we dinned
earlier were also disappointing at best, but the "all you can eat"
rib night was not only the best ribs we had that week, but also the
appetite quenching amount as well.
I would like to commend all of your staff, as they truly put
their best efforts into what made our times at Los Gauchos, the
best in Simpson Bay. Keep this up and the word of mouth talk will
create a need to add more help!
Best regards & our sincere thanks,
Mike & Lisa Gagne

Judy:
I have noticed some people have praised Las Gauchos restaurant as
being good. The first time I went there I said I would never go back. The
food was so so and way over priced for the quality and what you
received. I relented and went back and now I know I was right the first
time and will never go back. It doesn't compare with Pineapple Petes for
example. Ialways wished they had a good restaurant in the resort. Oh
well maybe some day. Ihave been an owner for ten years weeks 8
&9and I have just retired and sold one of our weeks. The second week
we will keep and bank it every second year and travel. Our beautiful
Islandis now too busy. Regards, Keep up the good work. Clarence Mercer

Dear Judy,
I would like to reply to Debbie and Mike Greenspan's letter from June
5, 2008. I too found the prices of extra nights at the Pelican to be
ridiculously high (around $200 for a studio). The answer that was
given me when I asked why the change was that the owners were getting
upset that single nights were able to be rented so cheaply. This makes
no sense at all. I can understand a higher rate to non owners but
owner rates should remain low to encourage rentals of empty rooms,
especially in August.I ended up renting a 2 bedroom at the Atrium
through Expedia for $146 a night for 2 nights! Eileen Sepesi
Judy's Response: It is the owners who deposit their weeks with
the Resort to rent that are concerned as the amount
they receive from the rental is very low. In order to have owners
give up their weeks to the rental department they need the funds
to be more in line with the cost to pay the AMF.

I just wanted to let you know that the Exchange system at Pelican has
gotten worse and worse over the years. I have been an owner since
1984 and only in the past 3 years have I ever had any problem with
exchanging. For instance, for the past 8 yrs I have been exchanging
one of my weeks for week 47 or 48 and Pelican is not busy at that
time. The real High season doesn't start for another 2 weeks and the
beach is always pretty empty. The run-a-round you get from Interval
Services is ridiculous for Pelican Owners. They tell me the reason
units aren't available is that owners are not notifying them that they
are not going to use their unit.
I find that hard to believe that all those units do not list them.
My guess is that this Interval service is giving these units to travel
agents or some other site at a much higher price. As owners we
should have first choice. We pay enough in maintenance fees to get
something out of them. I feel for the staff at the front desk, because
I see that their hands are tied and that they cannot help out or make
any changes unless they go through Cancun.
Last year I waited almost 3 hours before I was able to get into a room
because an elevator wasn't working. I was travelling with my 87 year
old Mother who was in a wheelchair and could not walk up to the 4th
floor in the B building. My request was for a 1 bedroom on the beach
or in the Marina Bldg. All along they told me they didn't have
anything available, but once the elevator went out of service, they
magically found a room in the Marina. Funny thing was one of the
members of the board (who was down there for the Dec meeting
specifically asked for a studio in the marina months ago, and they
told him that nothing was available to him either, he was not a happy
camper).
Is there anyway in your newsletters, or at the Directors
Meetings, that you could remind owners that they should let Pelican
know if they are not going to use their units. My last beef is the
outrageous charge of $149.00 to exchange my unit. That is highway
robbery. How long does it take a person to look up the available unit
on a computer and exchange one week for another. Where is all this
money going? To Cancun? At the end of the day, it costs me more
money to exchange this unit plus my maintenance fee then it is to
actually just get a travel pkg that includes air/hotel. My suggestion
is give it back to the Pelican staff to oversee the units instead of
wasting money on calls to Cancun every two minutes.
PS When will they bring back Marcos to the Beach Bar. The Bar and
food isn't the same since he left.
