Hi Judy.
Mary Cullen wrote in to ask about scuba diving on St. Maarten.
I am an avid diver and get in 9-13 dives each winter on my one trip to
Pelican. Dive Adventure with the Water sports group are consistently
great and take you more places than many of the other operators. The
diving has gotten better each year since I started going in 1999 right
after Lenny. This year encounters included: 7-8 foot reef shark, 2
dolphins, octopus, sea turtles eagle rays among the usual Carribean
creatures. If you can post it, I am attaching some pictures from weeks
4-5, 2002. David Kaplan

I am responding to Mary Cullen's question below. Her email was not
included in the message. We have been diving on the island for 8 or 9
years. In addition to the Dive Adventures folks at the Marina, I can
recommend Ocean Explorers who are on the beach at Sampson Bay which is
within walking distance of the resort. However, most of the dive shops
visit the same sites. The operators with larger boats will do two-tank
dives on some days and go further out towards St Bart to Groupers, Hens
and Chicks, and One Step Beyond. Just remember that the sites and what
you see change day by day. If you want to try something different go over
to Saba and do some dives there. Dave Zubrow

In answer to Mary Cullin about scuba diving. I have been very happy with
Dive Safari in Simpson Bay. I'm not sure whether they visit different
sites from the Pelican people, but I can vouch for their professionalism.

I have been diving with LeRoy French and Domnique Noire at Ocean Explorers
since 1989 [this is the little dive shop on Kimsha Beach just to the west
of the Atrium]. It was with these two wonderful people that I developed
a real passion for Scuba, so much so that I became a Divemaster some seven
years later. LeRoy has been diving for enough years that his NAUI
Instructor number is in two digits! Dominique not only teaches Scuba, but
also Aikido.
They take out small groups on a fast, wet boat, getting to most sites
within 20 minutes or less. You will of course go to Proselyte and the MV
Gregory, but they also have several special sites which are not on any of
the local dive charts. Both Dominique and LeRoy are especially gifted in
finding exotic critters, especially the minutae that is so often
overlooked but can be more dazzling than the largest mega fauna. Speaking
of which: I have seen wild dolphin with them on five different occasions,
including an encounter just off La Vista that lasted for 50 minutes!
Check their website at www.stmaartendiving.com/ Two tank dives daily
during high season; they don't dive on Sundays.
By the way-- Pelican Watersports Scuba is a great operation, and I have
enjoyed diving with them as well! Christopher Toy
